Upon arrival, they discovered the promised farmland was actually untouched forest. Their survival depended on the generosity of the Mi’kmaq and early New England settlers, who helped them adapt by learning to clear the land and use the forest. Their success attracted many more clansmen, turning northeastern Nova Scotia into a true New Scotland.
