Two summers ago, Philip Ball's arm provided scientists with a small piece of flesh that would ultimately become a "mini-brain." Despite being removed from his body, the skin cells were not destroyed, but rather transformed into nerve cells that worked together to form a complex network and communicate, creating the basic signals of human thought. In his latest book, Ball delves into the world of cell biology and tissue culture, exploring the possibilities of tailor-made replacement organs, advances in repairing and healing, and ultimately, the potential for individuals to "grow a human." One example is the potential to use skin cells to create eggs and sperm, or even transform oneself into embryo cells, opening up a multitude of new options.
